Eventually most of the adult penguins will disappear to the sea. The young penguin may never again its parent again.
The "baby" chicks, now as big as their parents in weight, will gravitate in groups down to the edge of the ice as they
begin to realize that the parents are not coming back. Eventually a brave one will jump in and others will follow. This is
their first time on the water and they will struggle a bit before learning to swim. This is their most vulnerable time to be a
meal to a leopard seal.
