Candlemas Island
That afternoon, December 7, 2007, we landed at Candlemas Island which also has a large colony of Chin Strap
penguins. In total, there are more than 2,000,000 breeding pairs of Chin Strap on the South Sandwich Islands. The
Chin Strap penguins make their nests using rocks. They breed in those rare places in the sub-Antarctic and Arctic
that are not covered by snow year round.
Because of the severe
winter this year, some of
the Chin Straps were
forced to dig a hole in
the snow to the ground
to make their rock nests.

When we left Candlemas, our Zodiac
driver took us on another tour of
icebergs.
