Japanese Snow Monkey
The Japanese macaque is a terrestrial Old World monkey species native to Japan. They are also known as the Snow Monkey
because they live in areas where snow covers the ground for months each year – no other non-human primate is more northern-
living, nor lives in a colder climate. Individuals have brown-grey fur, red faces, and short tails.

The macaque has many unusual behaviours including bathing together in hot springs and rolling snowballs for fun. We took these
pictures at the Jigokudani Monkey Park near Nagano. We had about 90 minutes at the park in addition to a mile hike each way on
snow and ice to get to the hot springs.
