Elephant seal pups are nursed by their mothers for thirty days. The milk is very rich and fatty. After thirty days, the pups are
abandoned by their mothers and left to survive on their own.
Abanondoned pups will often snuggle up to each other.
We also encountered fur seals. The males were just coming up to shore to stake out beach areas in anticipation of the arrival of
female fur seals.
Ironically, even though fur seals are much smaller than elephant seals, the males are generally quite aggressive towards humans
and whenever we encountered fur seals, we had to be on high alert as they can and do bite humans. The best response is not to
run, but to stand ones ground and yell back at the aggressive male fur seals.
