South Texas Birding

with Jackie and Elston Hill

January 2020
We spent fifteen days in South Texas. The trip began with our enrollment in a four day photoshoot with Alan Murphy. To that we added some
time in the areas around Brownsville, South Padre Island, Pfarr, and Port Aranasas.
What better place to see turkey vultures
than the Brownsville Landfill?
The Sabal Palm Audobon Center on the Rio Grande was a very nice
place to visit.
The feeders at the Audubon Center and Laguna Lacosta NWR had the usual
suspects: Green Jays, Cardinals, Doves, Orioles and more.
The South Padre Island Birding Center was one of the highlights of the trip. Amazing place. Arrive early for the 7:00 a.m. opening for the most
birds and best light. The Holiday Inn Express right across the street cost us just $58 a night with breakfast!
After South Padre Island we had a good time at Santa Ana NWR, Estero Llano Grande State Park, and the National Butterfly Center.
The coolest bird we saw was the
Common Pauraque. It sleeps on the
floor of the forest by day and blends
so well that it is almost impossible to
see.
Our four days with Alan Murphy were the highlight of our photography. Alan is amazing at
setups which he did at Casa Santa Ana B&B and Lagunac Seca Ranch.
And we finished up our trip at Port Aransas and Aransas NWR with white pelicans and whooping cranes and more.
Our friends Carolyn and John joined us in Port Aransas and were very helpful in finding birds in the area.
